MILA’S AND LAURA’S DAY OFF

Could life get any cooler for actresses MILA KUNIS and LAURA PREPON? Both have parts on a hilarious hit TV show, adoring boyfriends, and awesome movies about to hit theaters. What’s not to be happy about?

BY ALYSSA VITRANO

Clouds are invading the sky over the beach in Malibu, CA, but Mila Kunis couldn’t care less. In fact, finding something that doesn’t make her happy is even more difficult than not laughing during That ’70s Show. Whether she’s talking about idol Audrey Hepburn, the TV show Blind Date, or the humongous bowl of spicy pretzels on the lunch table at YM’s cover shoot, she does it with a gigantic grin and full-force energy. While Mila happily munches on a break from shooting, she watches costar Laura Prepon ride a horse along the beach (an activity that tops Laura’s Happy List). Both of the girls have galloped to new heights of happiness since landing their roles on That ’70s Show. Mila, 17, moved to Los Angeles from the Ukraine when she was 7 and had only a few small parts before she got cast as the high-maintenance Jackie. Laura, 20, a former Elite model, reluctantly left her home in New Jersey when she landed her first acting role ever as the tomboyish Donna.

When Mila heads onto the beach, Laura gives her a few pointers for her first horseback ride. Then they take turns trotting on them in the sand, clearly loving their day off. Here’s how they fuel the laugh track to the rest of their lives.

Costar comedy

MILA: “Wilmer [Valderrama] and Topher [Grace] always joke around. They’re dumb, but in a good way! Wilmer does all these funny voices and impersonations. Ashton [Kutcher] is really goofy. He always falls. If I didn’t like the people I worked with, I would have a really tough time on the show.”

LAURA: “Our director won’t put Wilmer near me anymore because we laugh the whole time. I get in trouble for laughing so much. I sit in my dressing room and Wilmer and the guys put on these skits, and I’ll just be sitting on the couch cracking up.”

Thongs: just say no

MILA: “To this day I cannot get used to how people wear G-strings all the time! At home, I put on my cotton Hanes underwear, good pj’s, and a sweater, pop in a video, and I’m as happy as can be. I love comfortable things. I hat to wear these high heels to an awards show once because I’m short, but the second I got offstage, I had my sneakers waiting for me to put on.”

LAURA: “I usually just wear baggy pants and a T-shirt. Tight stuff makes me feel constricted, and you don’t have to wear sexy clothes to be sexy. It’s all about how you present yourself. But now that I have a boyfriend, I want to look prettier, so I have a designated dress-up outfit—awesome long jeans, Gucci snakeskin heels, and my gold LAURA necklace that I’ve had since I was, like, 13.”

Cool boyfriends

MILA: [dating someone she met on the set of her new movie, Get Over It, for almost a year and a half]: “My boyfriend is a little punk boy. When we go out he dresses punk, but when we’re sitting around watching videos he’s in sweatpants and his hair isn’t spiked. He’s just normal.”

LAURA: [dating Malcolm in the Middle’s Christopher Masterson for almost a year and a half]: “Chris is amazing. I’ve never really had a serious boyfriend before now. A year and a half! That’s a pretty long time. He’s one of the funniest people I have ever met— just so witty and really smart. He’s never in a bad mood, and being with him has made me want to be better at what I do. I love to be with people who are always in a good mood.”

The best romantic gifts

MILA: “Little unexpected things from the heart are the best. I like old classic Pooh bear, so my boyfriend got me an old Pooh necklace at a flea market. It probably cost a dollar, but it meant a lot. And when we had been dating for two months, out of nowhere he sent a bouquet of roses with a card that said, ‘I just wanted to say hello.’”

LAURA: “My boyfriend brought me to the stable to ride, and we were looking around at the horses, and he was like, ‘What do you think of this horse?’ and I said, ‘He’s really cute,’ and he said, ‘Well, he’s yours!’ I was like, ‘Oh my God, you bough me a horse?’ I have this guidebook about horse pampering—massages, facials, body scrubs. I’m going to pamper my horse to no end. I’ve been riding for about ten years. It really relaxes me. My horse will kiss me and rub his head on me—I love that!”

Having a blast making movies on the side

MILA: [in Get Over It, out in January]: “I play Kirsten Dunst’s best friend. In the movie, Sisqó’s character likes me, but I don’t like him! While I was filming it in Toronto, my best friend came to visit and we acted like total tourists, walking around taking pictures of sights, really embarrassing. We were pranksters and would bother every single cast member—at two in the morning we would take empty pizza boxes and knock on someone’s door and run away. Dorks.”

LAURA: [in The Best and the Brightest, out in February]: “Making it was hilarious. My character is the exact opposite of anything Donna would do. This girl would put Erin Brockovich’s clothes to shame. She totally knows about guys, what’s going down. She’s like, ‘If you play with guys, they’ll always come back, you gotta screw with their heads.’ Totally in control of every situation, but she’s lovable. You just don’t mess with her.”

HAPPY COMPANION

I go hang out with my horse, because that makes me happy.

I’m my dad’s little baby, and if I'm down, he’ll do anything to make me happy. It’s so cute.

HAPPY CITY

Watchung, NJ, where I grew up. I’m so close to my family, and when I go back there, I’m so happy.

Manhattan. I love that at 4 a.m. there are tons of people on the streets and lights and cool things.

HAPPY SONG

The Ben Folds Five song “Army.” I put it on and I’m in such a good mood.

Beastie Boys’ “Girls,” only I change the words and sing “Boys! All I really want is boys!”

HAPPY MOVIE

Happy Gilmore, because Adam Sandler is funny. And the whole Indiana Jones trilogy, because I love Harrison Ford.

Pretty Woman—I can put it on mute and do all the characters’ lines. I own it, I love it!

HAPPY FLOWER

Snapdragons—a whole bunch are growing in front of my house. They’re tall and have flowers going all the way up.

Purple roses, as long as they have a smell to them. But I hate when they come with other things in the bouquet.

HAPPY COLOR

Black is really cool. It’s not a happy color, but I’m happy when I wear it.

Sky blue. I can look at the sky for hours.

HAPPY FRUIT

Any berry.

Bananas. An apple is a circle, an orange is a circle, what is a banana?

HAPPY FOOD

Peach cobbler à la mode.

Rocky road ice cream. And why would you not get whipped cream? It’s the best part. I could eat whipped cream by the handfu!
