Born on Dec 19, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Like all sensible people, I was only dimly aware of the Lifetime channel.

Lifetime, Oxygen, Pax — my cable line-up is choked with these and scores of other mystery channels whose names all seem to come from the same Latin root meaning “skip me” and serve only to make it more time-consuming for me to scroll through to the softcore channels like Showtime and Cinemax.

Then one day I caught an ad for something called Strong Medicine, a show that looks and sounds like a sappier version of ER, but it featured a busty-looking woman I thought might be either Sofía Vergara or Sandra Taylor — I wasn't paying enough attention to be sure. But since both women are on my site, I had to find out.

It was then that I learned three things:

  • The Lifetime channel is, by its own description, “television for women”, which is to say that it offers all the reruns of Golden Girls, Designing Women, and Ally McBeal that a woman with nothing better to do could want.
  • Strong Medicine is allegedly the highest rated program in basic cable history (a claim made by at least one other show on the same channel).
  • The busty woman that caught my attention is neither Sofía nor Sandra, but a relative unknown named Rosa Blasi, a Latin Chicago native seemingly cast in the show to lure in unwary viewers searching for eye candy.

I've already learned my lesson from Star Trek: Voyager and Boston Public that, as much as I might like the Hot Chick in the show (in this case, Jeri Ryan), it's rarely worth sitting through more than an episode or two just to watch her. And as good as Rosa might look (and she can look very good, although sometimes her features appear off-puttingly harsh, almost mannish), the irresistible siren call to the Lifetime channel just isn't there for me.

In theory, it's possible to catch her elsewhere: Reportedly articulate and fast on her feet, Rosa is a frequent guest on Politically Incorrect (where, I'm told, when asked if her breasts are real, she answered something like, “They’re the best that money can buy”), Craig Kilborne, Love Line, The Best Damn Sports Show Ever, and others, and also starred in the Vagina Monologues. But of course, the only one of these shows I've ever cared to watch with any regularity is no longer on the air.

Happily, there's Showtime's Noriega: God's Favorite, a movie fortified not only with a fair amount of Rosa, but Rosa in the buff to boot (albeit very briefly). I don't remember being blown away by the film when it first aired, but now that I know who Rosa is, it won't be long before I've bought the DVD.

But for the rest of the world — the sensible people who don't know much about Lifetime, don't have Showtime, and whose priorities aren't so far gone as to buy the Noriega flick for a mere glimpse at Rosa's rack — Lifetime's Strong Medicine remains the only place on TV where they can get a regular dose of Rosa. Unless, of course, the Oxygen or Pax channel pick up reruns of the show.

Also sprach Golem.
