Born on May 26, 1966 in Golders Green, London, England, UK.

As the world waits anxiously for its inexorable transition into the 21st century, Helena Bonham-Carter is still hoping to claw her way out of the 19th.

Of course, it's a Catch-22 situation: just as you need to already have credit to get a credit card, Helena's corset-girdled film credits to date seem to have doomed her to forever being the Merchant-Ivory poster girl. But even if you've never seen one of her films, her gothically aristocratic, Edward Goreyesque looks alone tell you not to expect her in the next Die Hard sequel. One glance at Pamela Anderson and a casting director knows immediately to get her into some leather or rubber as quickly as possible; one look at Helena and the costuming team comes running in with a corset. And no matter how much she contrives to change that image off-camera by dressing down, belching, cursing, and so on, no one's buying it. Which in turn makes her seem even more the tragic, gothic figure we all want her to be.

Also sprach Golem.

Helena Recast

It might be a wee early to say for sure, but I just saw Novocaine, and I’m getting the sense that Helena Bonham-Carter might be getting typecast again — this time as the mercenary, darkly witty, hot-but-disheveled “Marla Singer” character she played in Fight Club.... Read more

What a Difference a Couple Years Make

Wednesday, August 1, 2001
Gotta hand it to her — like Houdini, Helena Bonham-Carter somehow managed to unshackle herself from period fare like Frankenstein, Twelfth Night and Wings of the Dove and begin redefining her niche in Hollywood with films like Fight Club and Planet of the Apes. Not an easy feat for an actress as heavily typecast as she was.... Read more
