Born on Dec 31, 1951 in Managua, Nicaragua. Reportedly 5' 6".

It's a common perception that models in general are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. This may or may not be true, but some are at least perceptive enough to know they're in an industry that will in all likelihood will have little use for them by the time they're thirty, and take steps to have another career ready once the modeling ride ends. The trouble is that so many of these more perceptive models turn to acting as their new rock, the reasoning being that modeling is in many ways like acting, and actors, apart from being more respected than models, can often work until they die. Paulina Porizkova, Elle, Laetitia Casta — they all try, and some, like Uma Thurman, have even met with some success, but it's not for their acting that they're remembered, and the formula “modeling = acting” yet to be convincingly demonstrated.

Still, 80s sex icon Barbara Carrera made a pretty good run of it. She was a Nicaraguan model (although there was some talk that she was in fact Puerto Rican) who made a big splash in the fashion industry at 17 before moving on to Hollywood through a series of Chiquita Banana commercials and finally Puzzle of a Downfall Child (1970). Between her darkly feline look, aloof manner, and hard-to-pin-down-but-educated-sounding anglo-euro accent (she spoke five languages), Barbara managed to build a career playing intelligent — if mostly ornamental — seductresses and damsels in distress, most famously as Bond Girl “Fatima Blush” in Never Say Never Again (1983). Unfortunately, the demand for good-looking women in their forties and older is generally less pronounced than for good-looking women in their thirties, and Barbara, while she continues to work in film even to this day, for the most part dropped off the Hollywood radar once the 80s came to a close.

Also sprach Golem.
