Maybe it's the scarlet “L” she wears from her association with David Lynch, maybe it's her acting, but Sherilyn Fenn — beautiful seductress though she is — can't seem to get a break. She's been in a lot of films — specializing, as it were, in offbeat and/or low-budget ones like Wild at Heart, Boxing Helena, and, most famously, Twin Peaks — but few of them that weren't already made for T.V. or cable seem to have ever broken through the Straight-to-Video Barrier.

Not that this is a bad thing: Sherilyn's apparent insistence on the strange and unusual is one of the reasons I love her, and icons of the independent film fringe — even patently beautiful ones like Sherilyn — have no place at the multiplex.

Lorelai’s Aborted Brainchild

Not long after word was out that Sherilyn would be the new Lorelai of an upcoming Gilmore Girls spin-off centering on Stars Hollow's most well-read thug-in-training Jess (Milo Ventimiglia), new rumors surfaced that the as yet unborn series would not be carried to term. According to TV Guide, the latter is true, and Sherilyn's shot at re-emerging into the spotlight and possible critical acclaim have thus been given the rusty hanger as well.

It’s not that I’m not happy to see Sherilyn on TV again, or that I’m opposed to her appearing in Gilmore Girls again as a different character — perhaps that’s what the “doppelgänger” reference in Luke’s diner was ultimately hinting at. But when Alex Borstein (“Drella”/“Miss Celine”) and Marion Ross (“Lorelai ‘Trix’ Gilmore”/“Marilyn”) did it in other episodes, they at least took the trouble to look and sound like different characters; Sherilyn as “Anna”, apart from being a little older, thicker, and brunette, seemed very much the same person as “Sasha” from three years ago (who, coincidentally enough, was also raising an odd, bookish daughter).
