Born Samantha Karen Fox, on Apr 15, 1966, in East End London, England, UK. Reportedly 5' 1", 36DD-23-36.
I suppose if you're a huge fan of someone, if you've invested a large part of your time, energy and money to him or her, it's hard to let that person go even when that person's clearly no longer among the living. So it was with Jesus, L. Ron Hubbard, Tupac, Elvis ... and apparently Samantha Fox. Believe it or not, as with freshly expired Soviet leaders, there seems to be a conspiracy of denial surrounding the Cockney model/singer's disappearance.
As I remember it, Samantha Fox was something of a sensation back in the 80s. She became famous around the globe for posing topless in The Sun, and in 1986 began a Spice Girl-like recording career that Entertainment Weekly declared would oblige Madonna to retire to a convent. For a time, headlines tracking her life and cup size were the stuff of front pages, but then things started to go awry: First, at 21 she officially ended her topless days (I'm not just a pair of boobs there's a lot more to me than that), and then she started putting on the pounds (by the time she started making music videos she was looking a bit like a dancing Hobbit). Desperate dieting attempts only made matters worse, since it tended to take valuable inches off her bustline. After that, her appeal (at least in the U.S.) quickly withered and died, and not even Playboy's exhuming her in 1996 seemed to generate much interest.
But the world of print and cybermedia offer a happier ending in which Sam is alive and well and still very much a force to be reckoned with. They say that she still performs for audiences that outstrip anything Bruce Springsteen ever played for, that she's able to raise huge sums of money for humanitarian efforts like African Relief and Bare Aid, and that her albums continue to sell like hotcakes. Her image and music are adored by one and all the world over, they insist; only the British press is reluctant to give her the respect she so clearly deserves. And while she may not be as popular now as she once was, articles on the net feel that the only thing keeping her from a triumphal comeback is the still-lingering obsession with supermodels and their heroin chic.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, models like Laetitia Casta have already ushered in a return to the era of mammary chic, but still not a peep from Samantha; she's as hard to find now as she's been all through the 90s. Now I understand that Sam was raised Catholic, and that the Catholics are slow to bury their dead, but after ten years this refusal to call the time and put the coins on her eyelids can no longer be written off as a protracted wake; it's Weekend at Bernie's now.
