A while back, on a late, pornless night, I saw an HBO comedy special in which David Spade criticized HBO for having “forgotten its porn roots”, bitterly reminding his audience that HBO, like most pay channels, gained much of its initial popularity by nightly serving up endless softcore pornography. All that changed, though, when HBO decided it was strong enough to class up its act, and now where movies like Young Lady Chatterley 2 once helped insomniacs get through the night, one finds Autopsy instead. The problem: “I can't whack off to Autopsy,” David shouts — before adding thoughtfully, “Or can I?”

Try as I might, I'm not one of those who can.

Which is why I feel the need to pay my virtual respects to Clio Goldsmith, Camilla Parker-Bowles' sister-in-law and a softcore actress in several French and Italian b-movies that once enjoyed heavy rotation on latenight cable. She wasn't the most stunningly beautiful actress to ever work nude on the small screen — face-wise she was a little closer to real-life girls nextdoor than the kind one usually saw on TV or film — but when Autopsy was the only other thing on and Shannon Whirry, Tanya Roberts, and Delia Sheppard were nowhere to be found, Clio the go-to girl was there and could do in a pinch. She was the one-night stand you had when you were drunk and horny and all the bars were closed and you didn't have any cash left.

So let us now observe a moment of silence and private reflection on how our lives and nether regions were one way or another touched by this woman; let us drop to our knees and thank God Almighty for her — her and all the other busty but not quite beautiful b-actresses who've taken her place after she disappeared from history in 1985 (following an ugly divorce). Without her, HBO might have converted a whole generation of latenight cable couch potatoes to necrophilia.
