Is Anne Hathaway properly “hot”?

She’s pretty, to be sure, though feature for feature seems more the product of manga artistry than Nature: her eyes, brows, nose, mouth, and teeth all seem to have reached their adult size but, at the time of this writing, the rest of her head has not. Her charm is that of a pretty teenager visibly but awkwardly on her way to becoming a pretty adult.

Which is all well and good for an actress whose fame rests on charming, precocious roles, i.e., “Meghan Green” of TV’s Get Real, “Mia Thermopolis” of The Princess Diaries, and “Ella” of Ella Enchanted. Kid roles, in other words. But the charm wears thin when the teen actress — and her audience — reaches adulthood. (Witness Hilary Duff, even before she starved herself like an Olsen twin.) To keep her audience’s attention, the pretty actress usually has to be hot as well, and for that she has to be overtly seductive, something Anne has not yet been.

Fortunately, Anne is at least anatomically well equipped to meet that challenge — her facial features aren’t her largest ones — and it’s these other, larger features that may well help buoy Anne’s career forward from yesterday’s fame and glory to future fame and glory. More fortunate still is that Anne herself seems well aware of this, and she will be unveiling these hitherto unseen features in not one, but two feature films this year: Havoc and Brokeback Mountain. If the films don’t bomb (in which case Anne can showcase her seductive side, if she has one, to a wide audience), Anne stands to be the new It girl of Hollywood; if the films do bomb, she’ll at least be the new It girl of cyberspace. (Seductive or not, everyone loves it when a cute G-rated icon finally realizes, to borrow the signature quote of a fan’s email to this site, that it’s hard to reach for a star and still keep your shirt tucked in.)
