Born Katherine Noelle Holmes, on Dec 18, 1978, in Toledo, Ohio, USA.

When I first saw Katie Holmes on Dawson's Creek, I wasn't terribly impressed — she had the eyes of a world-weary forty-year-old and the body of a gangly fourteen-year-old — and I quickly concluded that all the hubbub about her was simply the result of her being the main chick on a popular show. Even when I caught a channel-surfing glimpse of her stripping down to her bra in Teaching Mrs. Tingle, there was still something unappealingly “not ready for the big screen” about her.

But then something miraculous happened in the short space between Teaching Mrs. Tingle and The Gift. Perhaps it was no more than a Britney Spears-like growth spurt, or perhaps the real gift came from Dow Corning Corporation, but Katie's ... uh, appeal suddenly went up a cup size or two. And just as suddenly — now that Katie's prematurely aged face is not so chimerically out of place with the rest of her — I began to understand at last all that hubbub about her that I had dismissed a couple years before.

Of course, this making mountains out of mole hills only makes sense to those who've grown accustomed to Katie's face and physique from regularly watching her show; to the rest of the world, she's still pretty unremarkable, and once the show ends, that'll probably be the last most of us ever see her again except in the occasional direct-to-video movie. (Pieces of April theoretically could be Katie's liferaft out of the stigma of TV and Dawson's Creek, but we all know it won't — even without knowing anything about the film.)

Also sprach Golem.

Thank You for Smoking

Saturday, April 22, 2006
Today I finally got around to seeing Thank You for Smoking, a satirical comedy about the machinations of a man who spins for the tobacco industry while trying to stay a role-model for his twelve-year-old kid. Insofar as this was reportedly a witty comedy, I couldn’t help thinking about Ridicule, another reportedly witty film, for in both movies the protagonists seem remarkably clever only because everyone else in the movie is thick. Thank You for Smoking is funny enough, I suppose, but a film like this really should be wittier.... Read more
