If ever there was an untapped resource in Hollywood, it’s Scarlett Johansson.

Young, beautiful, and possessed of a husky-voiced, wise-beyond-her-years charisma that’s at once complemented and rivaled by her developed-beyond-her-years body, the Ghost World co-star seems either uninterested or unready to go down the time-honored cursus honorium of most new It Girls and potential It Girls — which is to say that, with the iffy exception of Eight Legged Freaks, tight-shirted (or no-shirted) teen exploitation flicks are thus far conspicuously absent from her résumé. But as Scarlett herself seems to be keen to reveal with her increasingly lower necklines at premieres lately, there’s a lot there to be exploited.

Still, unless she lands a good sex kitten role in a wide-release movie, both Scarlett and her exploitable assets will start to fade from the public’s memory.

Happily, that might be about to change, starting with Lost in Translation:

• Scarlett, while not properly a sex kitten in the film, spends a good deal of it in her underwear — though the ass we see in the beginning probably belongs to “Miss Johansson’s stand-in” listed in the credits;
• Scarlett, Bill Murray, and the film are all very good, and have been getting glowing reviews. Moreover, it’s not that hard to find at the theater. (Small releases might just as well be direct-to-video.)

My guess is that not many people will see the film, but between the critical kudos and the showcasing of her still barely exploited sex appeal in a non-b-movie, Scarlett may have, in the very least, earned herself a longer breathing space before she has to do another Eight Legged Freaks.
