Back in the days of yore — that is, the early 80s — finding new material on Tanya Roberts was a fairly easy thing. First there was the late Charlies Angels period, when pictures of her in TV Guide and People magazine were readily available. Then there was the Beastmaster-Sheena period, when fans finally got a brief glimpse of what they've been aching for from her on film and in the pages of Playboy. Finally, in the early 90s, the era of the straight-to-video erotic thriller was born, and all prayers of the faithful were answered in an explosion of Tanya-centered soft-core porn. But this Golden Age for horny Tanya fans didn't last long, and after 1993 there have been more confirmed sightings of Sasquatch than of the former queen of 80s cheesecake.

As the millennium drew to a close, though, someone emailed me this bit of hope: Tanya Roberts could now regularly be found on something called That '70s Show. But my excitement at the news was immediately replaced with mild disgust, for I've detested this whole 70s nostalgia thing ever since it began, and while I had not seen this new sitcom that was apparently attempting to cash in on the craze, I wished it only Norm-like ratings all the same.

So it was some time before I actually got around to seeing the show, and when that fateful day arrived, I was disappointed to find that Tanya Roberts was on the show for two minutes at best. So I sat through another. Same thing. Then another. This time she wasn't on at all. I decided then and there that I couldn't sit through That '70s Show for glimpses of an aging Tanya Roberts any more than I could sit through Star Trek: Voyager for Jeri Ryan or Dawson's Creek for Michelle Williams. At some point every guy has to realize that a penis is a poor substitute for a TV Guide.

But then something happened...

Flipping through the channels, I caught a moment when Tanya was actually on the show. And as I sat there debating whether or not this was something I should bother to record and cap for the website, I found my eye wandering further and further away from Tanya and resting on ... her daughter.

Yes, the days when I could hold my head up high among the likes of Woody Allen and Peter Bogdanovich are over, it seems. After catching a few more partial episodes of Fox's moderate hit, I finally decided to go ahead and add the tomboyish, 5'10" redhead to the site. "The heart wants what the heart wants," Woody once feebly offered as a defense of the Soon-Yi thing. When I first heard this I laughed; now I find myself shouting "Right on, brother!"

But just who is this new TV nymphet, anyway?

Damned if I know. Her name, I eventually learned, is Laura Prepon, and as far as I've been able to find out, she was picked fresh from the trees of obscurity (her last gig was a short-lived web drama called They Go On). The husky-voiced Jersey girl reportedly landed the part of “Donna” on the show on account of her already being exactly like the character: jockish, deadpan, girl-next-doorish. Indeed, the biggest difference Laura has offered so far between herself and Donna is that Laura almost never wears her hair straight like Donna does on the show.

An unfortunate side-effect of this Donna-like personality is that we're not likely to see Laura on the big screen any time soon, and certainly not in the teen sexploitation flicks usually reserved for new TV eye candy. "I'm being really, really picky about stuff I do," Laura told Bikini magazine. "I don't want to do anything like Can't Hardly Wait, I don't want to do anything like Scream. I saw all those movies, and they were good, but they're just not what I want to do." Which means that any new scans I add to the picture galleries will likely only come from That '70s Show, magazines, and possibly E! for a long, long time.

So there it is. Yet another swan dive into the ever-deepening pool of depravity that is The Iconophile. Can adding Amanda Bynes or Hilary Duff to the site be far behind?

And Tanya Roberts? What of her? Does Laura know who she is in the celebrity pantheon?

Oddly enough, Laura was aware of Tanya's career before That '70s Show, even though she was only just born when Tanya first appeared on Charlie's Angels. "We don't really talk about her recent work, though," she says. Smart move.

After all the waiting Prepon fans have had to endure before seeing Laura on the big screen, after all Laura's pickiness about the movies she agrees to do, and Slackers is what she comes up with?! Whoever's been giving her career advice should be publicly flogged.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who thinks this, but ever since Laura went blonde, she’s been looking a little ... mannish. And this despite FHM’s recent efforts to convince the world otherwise.
