You needn't feel like a cultural boor if you've never heard of Yekaterina Rednikova — as most of her work is in theater, she doesn't appear to be a household word in her native Russia, either. But if you're one of those people who makes a point of browsing the foreign film section every now and then or watches every new video release on the shelf, you might remember her as the cute, tragic, and briefly topless woman from 1997's The Thief, the Oscar-nominated but somewhat hamfisted film allegory examining Stalin's allure and imprint on the Russian psyche. Rent it. Subtitles and Russian history may not be your thing, but chances are The Thief is the last time we'll get to see Yekaterina here in the West.
