Let me just say this first: I've never been a Star Trek fan.

Not since I was a kid, anyway. The last Star Trek movie I remember seeing was the goofy Search for Greenpeace flick, and after I saw a couple episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, I washed my hands of the whole franchise and never looked back.

But all this changed — without my even knowing it — the moment one of the Star Trek spinoff series took a certain actress out of her Hellraiser getup and slipped her into a catsuit.

Now, having been inundated with constant TV, radio, and magazine promotions for this show (though I've still never seen the show itself), I find myself knowing all sorts of things about it that I never cared to know before:

• The actress all the fuss is about is Jeri Ryan, a kind of harsh-faced Jessica Rabbit.
• She plays Seven of Nine, a former Borg
• The Borg are powerful but emotionless drones whose sinister collective consciousness is bent on “assimilating” the whole universe. (They seem to be a mix of the pod people from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the demon people from Hellraiser, and Microsoft Corporation.)
• Her ostensible function on the show is to play the Spock role (the voice of cold logic with occasional explorations of her latent humanity).
• Her real function is to boost ratings by offering a strong female character for young girls to admire and a big-chested female character for guys of all ages to beat off to.

Works for me. I might even have to make an effort to watch the show now and then. I don't want to watch it, and I know I'll hate myself for doing it, but sooner or later I know I will.

Of course, the real info people want to know is: Has she appeared nude anywhere? The answer, sadly, is “No”. Nor will she ever, according to her, on account of her kid. (She doesn't want his friends to goof on him when they find nudie pix of Mom.) Of course, that's what every TV actress says after achieving a small degree of fame. But after her show finally goes off the air and the script offers aren't quite as tribble-like as they once were, after five or so years of little to no work because she resents having to always play roles that require her to show off her body in some way — in short, after she's past her prime and most people have forgotten who she is — we'll need special cameras to track how fast her clothes fly off in endless softcore straight-to-video erotic thrillers as she makes up for lost time competing with the by then mummified Shannon Tweed. (Here's someone's guess as to what that might look like.)

So in the end, it seems, the tired mantra of the Borg is true: “Resistance is futile.”
