Born on Sep 28, 1967 in Tenafly, New Jersey, USA. Reportedly 5' 7".

The daughter of character actor Paul Sorvino, Mira became famous for playing ditsy blondes (beginning with Woody Allen's The Mighty Aphrodite) and dating Quentin Tarantino (beginning with the release of his bomb Four Rooms). Since then she's managed to ditch both Quentin and her ditsy image, the latter so well that one is hard pressed to find an article about her anymore that doesn't take time out to defend her much maligned intellect.

However, some are more sarcastic about it than others, and one can usually tell which is which simply by the length of the article: shorter ones often insist she's not a bimbo right at the beginning (“She may play one in the movies, but...”), longer ones see through the years of expensive education and behold ... an educated bimbo.

But perhaps “bimbo” is too harsh a word. “Pod person” might be better.

Think of her as Mr. Spock's comelier cousin — very logical, very literal, and almost completely ignorant of the non-academic world. (This is understandable when one considers that she lived her higher education insulated from the rest of the world in the ghettoes of Harvard academia, where men are still “white males” and women are “womyn”.) When reporters jokingly asked if her involvement in The Replacement Killers had anything to do with her involvement with Tarantino (whose love of martial arts movies is well known), she with some annoyance launched into an account of all her experiences with the Far East that preceded her relationship with Quentin. Her evidence that Mimic was more than just a rehash of Alien and would have “a broad fan base”: she took her mother to see it, and her mother said “it was a wonderful movie.” Other reporters were treated to an in-depth account of all the soul-searching and deconstructive analysis that went in to playing her one-dimensional bimbo character in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. And even as she lays on her back for a photoshoot, her crotch thrust up in the air and her hands clutching at her breasts, she feels compelled to ask everyone with each click of the camera, “Is this pose empowering?”

Of course, none of this would be much of an issue if she didn't constantly make it one by chewing reporters' ears off reciting her academic accomplishments and otherwise defending her intelligence before they might even think to impugn it. If she really wants to rehabilitate her IQ in the public eye, she would do well to heed the words of Lincoln: “better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

Also sprach Golem.

Whatever Happened to Mira Sorvino?
Remember when it seemed like Mira Sorvino might go on to be a huge star? Such is the power of reputation in Hollywood — and Mira's was for being extremely difficult to work with and tyrannical with the crew. Fortunately, she learned to be less obnoxious after being ignored in Hollywood for a while, but the damage is already done, and now no movie, no matter how big a hit, will likely save her from B-listdom.

Cupid Strikes the Mighty Aphrodite
June 29, 2004
CNN reported today that Mira Sorvino, 36, married 22-year-old actor Christopher Backus (whose lone acting credit to date is an appearance on Will & Grace). Sadly, this is the most interesting role she’s had in almost ten years.
