It didn't seem to matter that she was the hottest Hot Chick with the best cleavage in Beverly Hills 90210 for four years, or that she typically treated viewers eyeful of her boobs in her other TV endeavors. It didn't seem to matter that she made her breasts bigger and more ratings-friendly from time to time. Or that she shared them with the world in two topless magazine pictorials. Indeed, it didn't seem to matter what Tiffani-Amber Thiessen did — the viewing public just didn't seem all that interested.

Why is anyone's guess. Part of it may have to do with her face, with its wide, round, baby-fat features that at times made her look more like a cute but wholesome ex-mouseketeer than the sexy succubus she was striving for. Part of it may have had to do with her personality, which seemed more cerebral and aloof than sensual and emotional — as might be expected from the former class valedictorian — she was educated enough to know that sex appeal is where the money's at, but too educated to want to be stuck doing something that requires no education. (“I was literally in underwear for the first three years of 90210,” she once complained. “I finally had to go to the producers and say, ‘Look, I'm here to do a job, not be naked the entire time.’”) But the biggest culprit in Tiffani's struggle for stardom was most likely not the wholesomeness of her face or the deliberate nature of her sexual mojo — or even the “Amber” part of her name, which she herself suspected of keeping her from being taken seriously and dropped in 2000 — but her unshakeable association with TV — and in particular Beverly Hills 90210, a show which viewers were already getting sick of by the time Tiffani signed on. Indeed, Tiffani's future was so haunted by her 90210 past that to exorcise Aaron Spelling's ghost from her public image and appease the gods of fortune, she would require much more than getting bigger implants and dying her hair blonde — someone would actually have to die.

That person turned out to be her boyfriend, actor David Strickland of Suddenly Susan quasi-fame. For reasons he took to the grave, David hung himself with his bed sheet in a Vegas hotel, leaving no message behind save for the prophecy of great changes in the life of a prostitute he had met shortly before his death. Tiffani's name was mentioned in all the reports that came out about the incident, but usually only to point out that David himself made no mention of her, good or bad, before his suicide.

That she didn't appear in the final credits of David's life didn't matter. Somehow the curse was lifted, and Tiffani's career was born again. The Ladies Man and Hollywood Ending came out and, while no one went to see the films themselves, interest in Tiffani and her boobs (now bigger than ever) swelled as stills of her in lingerie circulated throughout the net. Then came Fastlane — TV's ripoff of The Fast and the Furious — which, while not the most watched show on the dial, has her back in her underwear and back in the public's field of vision. It's taken her a decade of trying, but she may yet become a full-blown star. Maybe.

But it had better happen soon. While Fastlane is getting old very quickly, so is Tiffani herself — all that funerary makeup the show has caked on her face can't hide what her close-ups reveal: the day isn't far off when the lucrative Hot Chick roles stop coming and the Mom roles start.
