Dark Angel’s Wings Finally Clipped

Jessica Alba in “Dark Angel”

Well, it’s official — like so many other TV shows before it built on the pseudo-feminist “(beautiful) girls kick ass” formula, Dark Angel will be going to crappy show heaven after just a couple seasons of no one watching it. The problem, as with most shows like it, is that Dark Angel never really understood the Ass-Whooping Hot Chick formula, never grasped that the genre’s true audience is men, not women (most of whom don’t buy the genre’s contrived feminist pretentions), and continuously inserted male-repellent chick-flick formulas into the show on the one hand while cutting back on the amount of skin flashed on the other.

Earlier I had predicted that when Dark Angel died, the stench would stick to James Cameron, not Jessica Alba, because it was the show more than the actors that no one liked. While this is still mostly true, Alba now has the problem that her male audience might well be tired of her after being promised a sex icon for two seasons but never really getting one. If she ever hopes to get back in the public’s good graces, she’ll get very naked very quickly in a movie that doesn’t go straight to video.
