Better to Remain Silent and Thought a Fool...
Ever notice how the threat of land sharks hasn’t been mentioned much since Saturday Night Live brought it to national attention in the 70s? That’s because their population has been dwindling ever since then, and is now at dangerously low levels. Luckily for the people of Oklahoma, Jessica Alba is on the case.
But no good deed goes unpunished, and unfortunately for the actress and recent mother, she made two tactical errors:
- In an awareness-raising campaign she appears to have launched last week in conjunction with a blogger calling himself “White Mike”, she glued posters on city property championing not the beleaguered land shark a species well-known to Oklahomans but the great white, a variety of shark most Oklahomans have cared little about since the Jaws franchise dried up.
- Though gluing posters on city property constitutes vandalism and can be punishable by prison time under Oklahoma law, the frequent cover model had herself photographed doing it, and the pictures were posted on “White Mike”’s blog.
Predictably enough, Jessica was tagged by an Oklahoma Parks and Recreation official who spotted her pictures on the blog, and the police got involved. Jessica offered her mea culpas, the United Way (who owns one of the billboards she defaced) forgave her, and all seems like it will blow over soon enough.
It’s strange, but for as long as I’ve featured Jessica on this site, I’v rarely heard her speak at least not in a way that would make me put her in the same mental league as, say, Jessica Simpson and until now have more or less given her the benefit of the doubt.
But now I can’t wait for someone to talk the two Jessicas into teaming up and doing something like chaining themselves to a tuna boat in protest of all the chickens of the sea that get caught in the nets, if only to confirm the comfortable, age-old stereotype that the prettier one is, the smarter one isn’t.
