Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger in “Brokeback Mountain”

It was announced today that former Brokeback Mountain stars Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams are splitting up. Is anyone really surprised?

You don’t have to know the details of their relationship to know that this would soon be coming: living and breathing on this planet alone should be enough to know that on-set romances are all well and good, but when the limelight on the movie that ignited them dims, the kissing co-stars inevitably start to find each other a lot less interesting.

Which is not to say that the Beautiful People should forgo the temptations of the set — by all means, let them indulge. But never marry your on-set fling, and for God’s sake, don’t have their kid.

Great actors, the pair of them. But clearly not the most well-thought out people.
