The Secret Life of Renee Olstead
Much has been made in the press about the growing crop of dangerously malnourished actresses in Hollywood, and the cliché is that the business itself pressures them to starve themselves like that. But I’m starting to think that this same body-image obsessed business pressured emaciated Renee Olstead to gain weight last year.
After Still Standing was cancelled in 2006, Renee more or less disappeared — first from the public eye, as she apparently took a year off to work on her much delayed second album Skylark, then physically à la Christian Bale in The Machinist, such that by October of 2007 she had largely lost the phenomenal curves that compelled me to take notice of her in the first place.
Happily, though for reasons I didn’t yet see, Renee had started eating again by August of 2008, and what she had lost she was now clearly regaining.
“Great,” I thought, “Now she just needs to get those things back on TV.”
But in fact, she was back on TV already — and had been for the past two months. She had a small role in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, a show that was roundly skewered by critics but was nevertheless very popular (more popular than even the obnoxiously over-hyped Gossip Girl, though it reaches fewer homes). And that, I suspect, is why Renee’s remarkable rack is back — the camera loves a thin girl, to be sure, but it loves ample boobs even more, and someone in charge who had seen her in the last seasons of Still Standing decided that a busty Renee would be better for the show than a bulimic one.
I don’t know. All that matters, really, is that as of her appearance at Melanie Segal’s Kids’ Choice Awards Lounge at the end of March, the old Renee is still intact. Just not on a show I’m likely to watch until her part in it gets bigger and her clothes smaller.
