Desperado 2

Salma Hayek in “Desperado 2”

There are the films you make because you passionately believe in them (as Salma Hayek did in Frida, though the movie proved to be mediocre), there are the films you do because you couldn’t get anything else, and then there are the films you do because the director feels you owe him.

What sort of film Desperado 2 is for Salma is anyone’s guess, as is the reason why it was made in the first place, given that there haven’t exactly been throngs of demonstrators clamoring for a sequel to 1995’s Desperado.

On the other hand, audiences haven’t been terribly impressed by Salma, either, except in Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn — which is to say they really only like her in simple Hot Chick roles — so perhaps Desperado 2 was indeed a smart move.

Still, with a comparatively small built-in audience, this sequel will have to be good in a way that no other sequel this summer has been if it’s going to make any money before it goes to DVD. (And quite frankly, if drooling over the film’s Hot Chick is the main thing it has to offer, I prefer to watch it at home on DVD, where I can enjoy it like I would any other porno.)
